Hi Hung - thanks for yet another fabulous newsletter - packed full of great pieces, new and different conversation topics and interesting themes - the best feed of recruitment related info and intel we received (by a mile!). We at Trapeze HR are trying to raise our profiles as a voice in the HR Recruitment space and so would love the opportunity to be more involved in a Brainfood episode. I'm an HR generalist who has become an HR recruiter and my business partner Harriet has worked as a recruiter both in house and on the agency side, so hopefully I/we feel we bring a big dollop of credibility with our worked experience. Could talk about many topics - hybrid working, the true value HR can add to a start up business.....and many other topics ! Jane

I wanted to start by saying that your recent post really struck a chord with me. It actually gave me the courage to reach out and share that I've just published my very first book on talent sourcing (still can’t believe it 😅) Your words about supporting each other in the industry encouraged me to comment here.

Also, I've been invited to speak at the upcoming SoSu event, which is both thrilling and nerve-wracking.

Your dedication to our community is truly inspiring, and I'd love to connect and have a chat about speaking opportunities as this is where I’m getting started now and I love it!

Thanks for being a source of motivation and encouragement!

Re: Candidate use of AI in job applications

I don't have AI write responses for me because

1. I can't get it to sound like me

2. It is difficult to give the AI the necessary context on my skillset and experience

What I do use AI for is to simulate the hiring manager so I can keep my application strongly focused on what the HM is probably looking for (rather than I think is cool).

I start by inputting the job description and any other pertinent info I have alongside a prompt that pretends I'm the recruiter conferring with the HM:

"""

You are a seasoned engineering manager at an early, seed-stage startup. You are hiring for a new role and your goal is to help your recruiter understand what to look for when screening candidates. I will be the recruiter and will ask questions, which you will respond to concisely and with specific examples. Start by reviewing the job description and asking the recruiter if they have any questions.

"""

Then I follow up the conversation with specific questions, like

- When screening resumes, what are the five most important skills to keep an eye out for?

- One of the questions on our online application is "Why do you want to work at [Company]?" What are some examples or themes that would resonate strongly with you as the hiring manager?

- Based on this job description, what are the three biggest problems that we would like a new hire in this role to solve?

- What is your opinion of this response from a candidate? [My written response here]

- What are some example behavioral questions you are likely to ask a candidate for this role?

Anecdotally, it seems to be making quite a difference for me. I've been seeing a higher than normal response rate and more than one HM has called out specifically how good my responses were.

love to get your involvement in some of the webinars I am doing covering 'AI-enabled candidates' vs 'AI-enabled recruiters'. You up for it William?

Yeah, that could be fun. Let me know your preferred way of taking this out of the comments section to discuss.
