Friends,
A massive month of events coming up - Hiring Success Amsterdam, Shine in NYC from BrightHire, Recfest Nashville - now going 2 days, TA Tech in Paris, Unleash in Paris, IHR in London…I hope you’re all suitably excited about it and will manage to get yourself along to at least one of them!
You know that I think it important that you do. Part of the game today is to ensure that you are deeply networked in industry - it will give you access to information others don’t have. Useful to hiring, useful for the job search.
Big List of Recruiting Events to Attend in 2024 - now also taking additions for 2025. If you’re an event organisation and already planning for next year, add your events onto the sheet - this spreadsheet is going to be like a forever stew - it might even be renamed that way 🤣
Thank you to: Eugène van den Hemel, Rob Walker, Bas van de Haterd, Gareth Flynn, Kevin Green, Dave Hazlehurst, Justin Sleep, Juliana Park, Pedro Porto Gusmão, Edward Morgan, Ross Clennett and Volker Westedt - your public enthusiasm for all things brainfood is the only marketing we get. Thank you!

What Do Brainfooders Think?
Looks like its tough to be an active participate in more than 1 or 2 industry communities - too much duplication perhaps?
An interesting result from the community, especially as it gives some credence to the idea that there is such a thing as ‘war for attention’. Thanks for voting everyone - make sure you scroll to the end of the newsletter to vote on this week’s question 👊
Brainfood Live On Air - Ep272 - Reviewing ‘Doing More with Less’ - Recruiting Efficiency in 2024, Friday 13th, 2pm BST
We’ve had over a years worth of rhetoric that we must do more with less. Well, have we got any examples where we have created efficiency gains in recruiting, whilst also cutting budget? We’re with a stellar cast this week, featuring heads of function from Deel, OLX and JLL. We’re on Friday 13th 2pm BST - register here, and if you want to go LinkedIn Live with us at the same time, click on this link now and synch up.
The Brainfood
1. C-Suite GenAI Survey 2024
There’s no demographic more enthusiastic about AI-enablement than the CEO’s. As discussed in last week’s most popular post, the perception is that AI’s primary value is saving time / money, mainly by cutting payroll. Quite important for us in the People business to make the case that there are other ways to invest that time saved. Survey from KPMG, 200+ surveyed, easy reading.

2. ZipRecruiter Jobs Report Dashboard
Great resource from our friends ZipRecruiter - a beautifully designed dashboard which pulls latest official US government jobs figures into an engaging interactive website. Great for us to have access to this data, though as has been widely discussed online, official stats often diverge from reality.

3. The Impact of the August 2024 Google Core Update on Online Recruiting
Brainfooder Alexander Chukovski is fast becoming the most cited community member in 2024, mainly for amazing posts like this. We need our niche hero’s to take the time to do experimentation, research and algorithm tracking. Essential reading for ATS providers and recruitment job marketers. Also, I’m fully on board with the conspiracy theory Alex!

4. How Immigration Remade the U.S. Labor Force
The US is experiencing an immigration boom, with as many as 9 million people arriving to the country since 2020. Fascinating breakdown from the WSJ on how these people arrived, what qualifications they have and what work they tend to do. The economy of course, needs these people - w/o immigration (legal or otherwise), the US would join the rest of the West with a declining working age population and assured fiscal and demographic crisis.

5. Brittany Pietsch, 8 Months On from Viral TikTok
There is no Schadenfreude here. Job market is tough not due to cyclical downturn but because we are at the beginning of a global transformation of work, where conflict between capital and labour will intensify. Brittany Pietsch, who became an unlikely avatar of that conflict when her TikTok live of her layoff from Cloudflare went viral earlier in the year, gives us an update on the job search.

6. Joveo How-To Guide Library
Wonderful resource from our friends Joveo - a free library of How-To Guides on topics ranging from Facebook Job Ads, High Volume Hiring, Candidate Experience, ATS selection, Diversity Hiring and the rest. H/T to brainfooder Heather van Werkhooven for the sharing these with us and outside of any email registration wall!

7. This is it…AI is Finally Going to Kill the CV
Every week I write an original essay on my other newsletter, which has now somehow now more popular than this one 🤣. You’re welcome to subscribe to it (its on LinkedIn) and you’ll get speculations like this - a sketch on how AI will ‘kill’ the CV, because candidate use of it will become a DDoS attack on legacy hiring funnels….

8. Evolution of a Software Business
This is a screenshot of the Reddit post which I though was a very decent history of the software business. As software production - and deployment - becomes ever more accessible to non-specialists, its inevitable that the value of software businesses will decline. SaaS is going the way web sites, implications for tech recruiters should be pretty clear.

9. Volkswagen Has ‘A Year, Maybe Two to Turn Around’, Financial Chief Warns
VW’s shocking announcement of forthcoming factory closures - the first time ever in the history of the company - is a stark illustration of the challenges facing Germany, and the European economy as a whole. Outcompeted by China on manufacturing, and by the US on software services, Europe missed the opportunity of key technology innovations in the last decade - smartphone, social web, cloud, 5G, EV’s - despite often being in the lead and has been left ‘selling the past’ in the form of tourism and luxury goods. Europe needs to recover its mojo, statim.

10. 'Chrono-working': The New Job Trend That Revolutionises the Australian Workforce
Are you a morning person or a night owl? Maybe ‘chrono-working’ is going to render it irrelevant. One of those crazy seeming ideas which makes sense as soon as you get your head around it - organising work around how people sleep. We might be settling into a pattern of hybrid work - London seemingly more so than any city in the world - but that may be a temporary holding point to an even more radical future. I’m all in. H/T to brainfooder Ivan Harrison for the share.

11. UK’s 100 Year Economic Decline - No 1 to Failed State
Fascinating monologue charting economic history of the UK. Some of this is natural rebalancing of economy vs population density, but a great deal was also self inflicted, especially the squandering of the lucky boon of North Sea oil discovery. Not easy listening for the Brits but important to understand how we have got here, in order to make better decisions going forward.

12. How to Build & Monetize a Community with Hung Lee
Real pleasure for me to join brainfooder Thomas Kohler on his outstanding show, The People Factor Podcast. We end up talking mainly about audience and community building, so if anyone is interested in learning more about that, this is a good episode on the topic.

13. Opening Pandora’s Box on Skills-based Hiring
Great to listen to this podcast from our friends Arctic Shores, talking about Skill Based Hiring. Deeply insightful conversation on the topic of SBH - have a listen here. H/T to brainfooder Bas van de Haterd for the share.
BTW: I will be joining Robert for a follow up Gen Z use of Gen AI early next month - sign up here.

End Note
Some step change innovations are coming from the recruitment tech providers. One of the most powerful ‘AI assisted CV/Resume Review’, where AI will review job applications and CV’s and make recommendations, sort orders and summaries on suitability - effectively, the reading the CV in place a human recruiter. Question for the community is: would you switch this feature on and use it?
That’s it - thanks for reading
Have a great weekend everyone
